Gig Review: Illy
Albury is the 2nd last show of Illy’s massive national tour that began back in March, and one of the first to sell out. A few supports were brought along to make it something to remember. MC Clue (Wangaratta born, now Melbourne based) was the first up, pounding on stage with a whole entourage of MC’s hailing from all over. A new face every song, it was a fresh start for the night. Canberra MC Citizen Kay was next, bring some intense funk & drum beats with him. Citizens first time in Albury, expressing his love for the intimate crowd, not before he funked & gyrated his way around stage like mad. A very soulful & emotional performance, something to break up the stereotype of Aussie hip hop. Illy leapt onto stage, blasting the crowd away with his humble & charismatic performance. Illy has been going hard for the past 10 years, and still managed to impress & exceed everyone’s expectations. Old songs & new songs were played from across his 5 Aria nominated albums, to the joy of all fans. The way he moved across stage, they way he captured the attention of the audience, helped solidify Illy as one of the best live hip hop acts in the current Australian hip hop scene. A must see for hip hop fans, old & new, without a doubt.
